Music in nigeria,
underpaid or what.
Have you ever thought of the effect of the population of the country on the sales of music ? Have you ever projected the income from the sales of albums that will come to the artist ? If we look closely, Nigeria is a country blessed with over a hundred million people, some even say a hundred and fifty and some say still counting. The percentage of the youth is also high. Right now the word on the street is PROUDLY NIJA, that is we love our own, we support our own, but do we go all the way out to buy what our own are putting out. It will shock you that some foriegn artist are still selling here more than our own, it will surprise you that some are even more popular here than our own. So kini big deal with all the hype about the one million record sale. From research, Alaba sells a cd for as low, sorry as high as N50 and the guy on the street sells for as low, sorry again as high as N150. I was even told that from the N50 the artist gets N15. In US you can get a cd for $12 (N1,800) not even considering digital download. My question, is that our artist do not have the right material to sell or is it that we just don't want to put our money where our mouth is ? another question, in a country of over a hundren million why can't the BIGGEST artist sell as much as ten million copies ?
